In quite the surprise twist, A24 has acquired Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist.” The deal is set to be in the $10M range, A24 beat out the likes of Sony Pictures Classics and Searchlight to nab Corbet’s critically acclaimed film.
“The Brutalist,” which won Corbet the Silver Lion for Best Director, is a 3.5-hour historical epic tackling a Jewish immigrant’s rise as a brilliant architect in post-WWII America. Adrien Brody’s performance is towering, and Guy Pearce is brilliant as the shady millionaire who hires him to build an ambitious project.
What does this mean for A24? It’s most likely an indication that the studio has given up on “Sing Sing,” as their Oscar priority — that film was a theatrical bust. They’re betting all of their chips on “The Brutalist,” which will no doubt get multiple Oscar nominations. They also have “Queer,” which sounds more like a Daniel Craig push.
