Earlier in the year, Alice Rohrwacher’s “La Chimera,” which also premiered at Cannes 2023, was released stateside to glowing reviews. It’s still one of the best films of the year.
The Italian-born Rohrwacher made good on the promise of her 2018 gem “Happy as Lazzaro.” In “La Chimera” Rohrwacher’s trademark magical-realism had us constantly interpreting events as they unfolded onscreen. It was the kind of film that kept shapeshifting as it went along.
If you’re wondering what’s next for Rohrwacher, the filmmaker is telling Vogue that she’s currently writing a script for a “contemporary silent film.” Whether this is a project she’s directing remains to be seen, but as far as I know, Rohrwacher doesn’t write other people’s films. All of her screenwriting credits have been for her own directorial efforts.
