It’s not that surprising to learn about the awful reviews “Reagan” has been getting from critics. It was never going to convert any of them. And yet, audiences seem to love it. The film just earned 4 1/2 stars on PostTrak, an A on CinemaScore and is 98% “Verified Hot” on RT. It was released in 2500 locations this weekend and is set to earn around $8M by Sunday — its budget was around $20M.
Sean McNamara‘s biopic, starring Dennis Quaid, is being touted as the first full-length feature about the 40th U.S. President (trailer). This is being marketed towards the same conservative fanbase that came out, in droves, for last year’s “Sound of Freedom.”
“Reagan” was shot in 2020 and was recently picked up for North American distribution by ShowBiz Direct. There have been multiple delays on this one. At some point, it was in total limbo, and some were speculating that it might never see the light of day.
The film stars Quaid as Reagan, Jon Voight (!!!) as Viktor Petrovich, Penelope Ann Miller as Nancy Reagan, Mena Suvari (!!!) as Reagan’s first wife Jane Wyman, Lesley-Anne Down as Margaret Thatcher, David Henrie as teenage Reagan, and Kevin Dillon as Jack Warner.
