It looks like A24’s unusual rollout of “Sing Sing” is coming to an end, to the point where almost eight weeks into its release, the film is now starting to lose theaters, 42 of them this weekend. It’s now down to 149 screens nationwide.
It was just last week that A24 offered free screenings of “Sing Sing” at AMC theaters across the U.S. By visiting “See Sing Sing,” you could select your city and input your email to receive a code for a free ticket, redeemable at participating AMC theaters. Some saw this as a desperate attempt to get word of mouth going for the film.
Oscar pundits have fallen hard for “Sing Sing,” to the point where many of the “experts” have it as the current frontrunner to win Best Picture. A tad too early to predict what will get nominated come next January, but you’d think that such a hotly buzzed film would have already garnered an audience of some kind, especially with A24 backing it.
The result is that “Sing Sing” has only grossed $1.6M during its total domestic run. Compared to another summer indie critical darling, Focus’ “Didi,” which has earned almost $4M, and you start to wonder where the audience was for “Sing Sing.” You can read more aof my thoughts about “Sing Sing” here.
