On 07.20.24, I reported on the possibility that the next ‘Jurassic World’ movie, directed by Gareth Edwards, would be called “Jurassic World Rebirth.” It’s now been confirmed as the title.
Additionally, two “first look” images have been released, featuring stars Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Bailey. “Jurassic World Rebirth” is being described as a “semi-reboot,” starting from the events of “Jurassic World: Dominion,” but with new characters, locations, and dinosaurs.
Variety is reporting that the film will be set five years following the events of ‘Dominion,’ when “the planet’s ecology has proven largely inhospitable to dinosaurs.”
“Those remaining exist in isolated equatorial environments with climates resembling the one in which they once thrived,” the synopsis continues. “The three most colossal creatures within that tropical biosphere hold the key to a drug that will bring miraculous life-saving benefits to humankind.”
“Eventually, [the main characters] encounter a civilian family whose boating expedition was capsized by marauding aquatic dinos,” at which point everyone becomes “stranded on an island where they come face-to-face with a sinister, shocking discovery that’s been hidden from the world for decades.”
Johansson’s character is “covert ops expert” Zora Bennett, who has been hired to lead the team extracting DNA from the three most gargantuan dinosaur species left alive. Ali plays Zora’s partner, Duncan Kincaid; Bailey plays a paleontologist named Dr. Henry Loomis; and Rupert Friend (“Homeland”) plays Martin Krebs, the representative of the drug conglomerate funding the expedition. Philippine Velge (“Station Eleven”), Bechir Sylvain (“BMF”) and Ed Skrein (“Deadpool”) make up the rest of Zora’s team.
Earlier in the year, Edwards (“The Creator” and “Rogue One”) took over directing duties after original helmer David Leitch dropped out of the project due to “creative differences.” The script is from David Koepp, who wrote the original “Jurassic Park.”
The film started production in June and is expected to wrap things up this coming October. Produced by veteran ‘Jurassic’ producers Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley, “Jurassic World Rebirth” is set for release, via Universal, on July 2, 2025.
