Colin Firth is in talks to join the cast of Steven Spielbrg’s next film. The Amblin/Universal project is based on an original story by Spielberg with David Koepp (“Jurassic Park”) writing the script.
Firth, who has never worked with Spielberg before, won the Best Actor Oscar in 2011 for “The King’s Speech.” His most memorable roles have been in films such as “A Single Man,” “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,” “Shakespeare In Love,” “Love Actually” and “Kingsman.”
Universal Pictures had announced that Spielberg’s film, possibly titled “The Dish,” will open in theaters on May 15, 2026. It’s unclear what the project is about, though it was already reported to be a “UFO” film. The studio has also described it as a “new original event film.”
This is said to be Spielberg’s return to the alien genre, a topic that has obsessed the filmmaker for many decades, specifically in films such as “ET,” “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” and “War of the Worlds.”
Only Firth and Emily Blunt have been confirmed as being part of the cast, it’s also been reported that Josh O’Connor will be in the film. Described as a “two-hander,” Spielberg’s UFO project is set to commence production February 2025 in New Jersey and Atlanta, Georgia.
Spielberg’s last film was 2022’s “The Fabelmans,” the most personal statement of his career, and which garnered overwhelmingly positive reviews and a slew of Oscar nominations. This came after another critically-acclaimed film, 2021’s “West Side Story,” which itself was a seven-time Oscar nominee.
