Hidden inside this Variety report on Korean cinema is the tidbit that Michael Mann will start working on his remake of “Veteran,” that is after he’s done making “Heat 2.”
While Michael Mann is 81, he won’t be directing anytime soon. “Veteran” is an adaptation of Ryoo Seung-wan’s 2015 crime thriller, a massive hit in South Korea and the 5th highest-grossing film in the country’s history. It also sounds like prime territory for Mann.
“Veteran” follows a detective who is tracking down a young, and wealthy, business owner who is running his own crime syndicate. Mann’s version would be set in a U.S. city.
The film, still in the development stage, was originally announced as Mann producing and writing the screenplay, but it looks as though he’ll also be directing it. This is great news given that before last year’s “Ferrari,” Mann hadn’t directed a film in over 8 years.
