With Adam Wingard having recently left the Monsterverse, Warner Bros. and Legendary were searching for a director to helm their next franchise installment. Deadline is indicating that they have found their man. The outlet is reporting that Grant Sputore will take over.
You might be wondering, who? With the exception of 2019’s “I Am Mother,” Sputore hasn’t really played in the Hollywood sandbox. He’s primarily knowns for commercials. It’s an interesting hire on the part of Warner Bros. and Legendary. Then again, it’s not like Wingard put much of a personal stamp on these movies either, there must surely be a blueprint that Sputore will be forced to follow.
We don’t really know what the next Monsterverse movie will be about, just that it’s currently in various stages of development and, I presume, Godzilla will be featured somewhere in the plot. Dave Callaham (“Shang-Chi”) is penning the screenplay, and one of his credits includes Gareth Edwards’ 2014 “Godzilla.”
This year’s “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” hit theaters in March, eventually becoming the franchise’s highest-grossing film at $569M worldwide. There had to be a sequel, but Wingard didn’t want any part in it. He’s back to making more personal films having recently been hired by A24 to direct “Onslaught.”
