While he’s back in production on his A24 musical “Mother Mary,” David Lowery has set up what could potentially be his next film. Lowery is working on an adaptation of Ottessa Moshfegh’s novel “Death in the Hand”, a mystery-thriller with an unreliable narrator. Here’s the synopsis:
Vesta Gul, a 72-year-old widow, is walking her dog in the woods and finds a note that reads: "Her name was Magda. Nobody will ever know who killed her. It wasn't me. Here is her dead body." However, no body is in sight. Vesta becomes obsessed with discovering who Magda was and the circumstances surrounding her death.
Moshfegh is a very hot author in Hollywood these days. Her “Eileen” was recently adapted into a film starring Anne Hathaway and Thomasin McKenzie. Yorgos Lanthimos is also working on an adaptation of her wild novel, “My Year of Rest and Relaxation.” Meanwhile, Andrew Haigh (All of us Strangers) is also said to be adapting her 2014 novella “McGlue.”
Lowery is very savvy at juggling arthouse passion projects (“A Ghost Story” “The Green Knight,” “Ain’t Them Bodies A Saint”) with high-priced Disney movies (“Pete’s Dragon,” “Pan and Wendy”). This one will most likely belong with the former.
