Last November, Destin Daniel Cretton exited as director of ‘Avengers 5.’ Cretton said he left the project to fully concentrate on his ‘Shang-Chi’ sequel.
Six months later, Marvel might have found Cretton’s replacement. Deadline is reporting that “Deadpool & Wolverine” helmer Shawn Levy is the top choice and in early talks to direct ‘Avengers 5.’
Levy has been handed the latest script, penned by Michael Waldron, though Deadline’s sources do emphasize that he has not given an answer on whether he will accept Marvel’s offer. He’s currently heavily involved on the final season of “Stranger Things,” and is also supposed to direct a ‘Star Wars’ movie.
With that said, and given Levy’s credentials, I would be shocked if he doesn’t hop on board the next ‘Avengers’ flick. It’s right up his alley and he’s probably going to be Marvel/Disney’s new golden boy this summer since it’s looking very likely that ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ will be a major hit.
Levy is the stalwart filmmaker behind “Big Fat Liar,” “Just Married,” “Cheaper by the Dozen,” “The Internship,” “Real Steal,” the “Pink Panther” reboot, “Free Guy” and those “Night at the Museum” movies. Not a single good movie out of the bunch.
These next two ‘Avengers’ instalments have been described as "a giant five-hour movie with a year-long intermission." ‘Avengers 5’ has a 2027 release date, with the strikes having resulted in it being pushed back from 2026.
Based on what’s been reported, the movies had to be rewritten due to the recasting of Jonathan Majors, who was set to play the main villain, Kang the Conqueror. No word yet on whether Kang will still show up in these movies, but there had been an old rumor that John David Washington was possibly replacing Majors.
