The big film this week, no offense to Kevin Costner, is Michael Sarnoski’s “A Quiet Place: Day One.” This is the third entry in the franchise. The first film, released in 2018, is still, far and away, the best and most accomplished one.
I found ‘Day One’ to be a decent, but unexceptional entry in the ‘Quiet Place’ franchise. My main problem with the film resided in it feeling fairly conventional and having not taken enough risks in the storytelling.
Lupita Nyong’o (“12 Years A Slave,” “Us”) is the main reason to watch it — she’s one of the best and most underused actresses out there. It’s great to see her get another lead role, and I bet ‘Day One’ wouldn’t have been as watchable without her (and that cat) starring in it.
With that said, “A Quiet Place: Day One” had a $15M Friday, not counting the $6.8M Thursday previews it had already grossed. It’s on its way to a $50M opening weekend. I gather many of our readers will or have seen the film — what did you think?
