With the Hulu documentary Brats bringing back nostalgic memories of the Brat Pack and “St. Elmo’s Fire,” Sony is now considering making a sequel to the 1985 coming-of-age film.
Deadline’s reporting that the studio is currently exploring all options for a “St. Elmo’s Fire” sequel which would reunite the entire cast, including Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Andie MacDowell, and Ally Sheedy.
The late Joel Schumacher directed the original, based on a script he co-wrote with Carl Kurlander. The sequel would tackle the characters in present day and find out what happened in their lives. No director is attached. They don’t even have a script, but it looks like Sony wants to make this happen.
The 1985 film, centering on a clique of recent graduates, and their adjustment to post-university life, received negative reviews from critics but was a box-office hit, grossing $37.8M on a $10M budget. Rob Lowe also won the Razzie for Worst Supporting Actor.
