It turns out Julia Ducournau’s next film will be “Alpha.” The cast includes Golshifteh Farahani (“Paterson”) as well as César award-winning Tahar Rahim (“A Prophet”).
“Alpha’ is Julia’s most personal, profound work yet, and we are looking forward to a global audience discovering the story with as much excitement as we did,” FilmNation Entertainment and Charades said in a statement. “We can’t wait to bring the film to market in Cannes and to launch sales together for the first time and collaborate in this way.”
No plot details were revealed. This one is expected to shoot in the fall.
It’s been three years since Ducournau’s Palme d’Or winning “Titane,” which resulted in polarized reactions at Cannes 2021. Even the Telluride Film Festival rejected the film. I dug its midnight movie vibes.
There’s also no reason to fault the Spike Lee led jury from that year for giving it the top prize. It was a ballsy move and Ducournau’s film did feel like something we had never seen before. As Lee stated in the closing press conference: “I’ve never seen a film in my life where a Cadillac impregnated a woman.”
It’s also well worth checking out Ducournau’s first feature, 2017’s “Raw.” I interviewed her for that one, little did she know that she’d become a Palme d’Or winner a few years later. You could see the makings of genuine talent when watching that film.
It should also be noted that Ducournau is working on her own TV series with A24, but that one is still in the very early stages of development.
