Coming off the hot drama that was “Don’t Worry Darling,” Olivia Wilde is clearly not in “directors’ jail.” Hollywood has given her another shot.
Wilde shot her third film as a director, the Christmas comedy “Naughty, and now she’s about to embark on a comic book movie, titled “Avengelyne,” and it’s set to star none other than Margot Robbie. The screenplay is being penned by “Poor Things” scribe Tony McNamara.
In a seven-figure rights deal, Warner Bros has boarded “Avengelyne,” what might have clinched it is probably Robbie’s potential participation — she gave them a billion dollar blockbuster last year (“Barbie”). It helps that Warners’ Michael De Luca is also a fan of the comic, he had previously optioned “Avengelyne”, a long time ago, when he was at New Line.
The character is described as an angel who fights the forces of evil, regularly coming into contact with demons and other nefarious creatures. While she has single-handedly taken on the devil himself, she was also banished from heaven after she was tricked into questioning his love for humans. Now she spends her time on Earth fighting demons, and is considered the world's last hope in staving off Armageddon.
Now, do I really need to recap the behind the scenes drama that occurred on Wilde’s “Don’t Worry Darling”? It’s now the stuff of Hollywood legend. Wilde had an affair with her actor Harry Styles, while she was married to Jason Sudeikis, and, on some days, would just not show up to shoot her film. It’s been rumored that Wilde was not the sole director of that film — here’s looking at you, Florence Pugh.
