One of the best moments of last night’s Oscars ceremony was when Hayao Miyazaki won his second Oscar for “The Boy and the Heron.” He was, sadly, not at the ceremony, but having the 83-year-old master win in this category was music to my ears.
However, one person, from a rival nominated film, was none too happy about Miyazaki’s win. There’s always a sore loser, every year, and 2024 honors go to actor Shameik Moore, who voices Miles Morales in “Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse.”
Moore took to social media to voice his displeasure with the outcome, posting “robbed” on X/Twitter and, following some pushback, wrote up a more detailed response:
Respect to the winners. It’s true, I’m definitely a sore loser, but we didn’t lose, ‘Spider-Verse’ has impacted A LOT of lives, we may not have been acknowledged tonight but life goes on, and BEYOND…yeah, get ready.”
Sir, you were up against Miyazaki. The writing was on the wall. Bow down to him. Then again, Moore is the same guy who said Rosa Parks should have taken a black-owned taxi during the Montgomery bus strike.
I like producer and co-writer Chris Miller’s response to Moore’s comments. He said, “Well, if you’re gonna lose, might as well lose to the GOAT.” Referring to Miyazaki as the “greatest of all time.” My thoughts exactly.
This is coming from someone who genuinely liked the visual inventiveness of ‘Spider-Verse,’ but, goddamit, there is only one Miyazaki, he is still among us, and he delivered another great film about loss and acceptance with “The Boy and the Heron.”
