No offense to ‘Across the Spider-Verse,’ which I liked, but for the longest time, Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man 2” was known as not only the best Spidey movie ever made, but also one of the best comic book movies ever made. At least, in my world it is.
Thomas Haden Church, who appeared as Flint Marko in two Spider-Man films, including Raimi's “Spider-Man 3” and Marvel Studios' “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” has yet again kickstarted Raimi/Spider-Man rumors due to comments he made in a recent interview.
Church says he’s heard that “they might ask me to do another Spider-Man”. He also believes that “Sam [Raimi] is gonna do another Spider-Man with Tobey [Maguire],” and that it’s the one they were supposed to call “Spider-Man 4” before the Raimi-verse got shut down and the franchise reboot, twice, afterwards.
Church had originally told ComicBook.com that there were rumors around his circle that ‘Spidey 4’ was in development.
There's always been some kind of…I've heard rumors…that Sam Raimi is going to do another [Spider-Man movie] with Tobey [Maguire] and if that happens, I would probably campaign to maybe at least do a cameo
Raimi’s fourth Spider-Man project came very close to getting made in the late aughts, with Sony pushing it deep into pre-production mode. Raimi ended up leaving the project and then those Marc Webb/Andrew Garfield movies were made soon after.
Not too long ago, Raimi had confirmed that he wants to return and make “Spider-Man 4” with Maguire.
I've come to realize after making Doctor Strange that anything is possible, really anything in the Marvel universe, any team-ups. I love Tobey. I love Kirsten Dunst. I think all things are possible. I don't really have a story or a plan. I don't know if Marvel would be interested in that right now. I don't know what their thoughts are about that. I haven't really pursued that. But it sounds beautiful. Even if it wasn't a Spider-Man movie, I'd love to work with Tobey again, in a different role.
If you remember, Raimi had some unfilmed ideas for his fourth “Spider-Man” movie, but that project never happened because, well, “Spider-Man 3” turned everybody off, including Raimi. The filmmaker hasn’t been shy in acknowledging that injecting that third film with an emo Peter Parker was a terrible idea.
Honestly speaking, I would be way more excited about a Raimi/Spider-Man movie than any of the Tom Holland ones. At least Raimi nailed the second one. I thought the Holland Spideys — ‘Homecoming,’ ‘Far From Home,’ ‘No Way Home’ were barely memorable. Then again, Maguire is 48 years old — isn’t that a tad too old to play a Peter Parker?
