Dan Trachtenberg directed “Prey,” 20th Century’s nifty straight-to-streaming “Predator” spin-off. It was a word of mouth hit on Hulu and even had some folks wondering why it didn’t get a theatrical release that summer.
Well, following the massive success of “Prey”, 20th Century is moving forward with the next ‘Predator’ film as Trachtenberg is set to return for “Badlands”, a new standalone pic in the franchise that is expected to shoot later this year.
Plot details are being kept under wraps. It is also unknown whether 20th Century plans to also stream this one exclusively on Hulu — 2022’s “Prey” broke viewerships records for the streamer. I would bet that they’ll be giving this one a theatrical run, and then drop it on HULU a month or so later. This scenario makes the most sense to me.
I’m glad Trachtenberg has found his footing as a director. I found 2016’s “10 Cloverfield Lane” to be a damn-near impressive directorial debut. You can just sense a good filmmaker by the way a shot is structured or a scene is composed, and Trachtenberg just has it.
