A few weeks ago, Brady Corbet confirmed that he was already writing his next film, a ‘70s set horror-western that will have a “looser style,” but will once again tackle the immigration process, this time from China to California. He was inspired to write it after watching “Texas Chainsaw Massacre.”
This past week, while speaking at the TIFF Lightbox, Corbet added an extra layer of detail about this next film. He’s going to be shooting it in a rather unique and very rare format:
I'm doing my next film on an eight perf 65mm camera and so I'm definitely continuing to to work with large formats um I loved working with VistaVision [on “The Brutalist”] but I would like to try something new.
Corbet shot ‘The Brutalist’ on 35mm 8 perf, and then blew it up to 70mm. IMAX is 15 perf 65mm, which is 65mm film running horizontally. Standard 65mm is usually 5-perf. How would shooting on 8-perf 65mm even work for such a large scaled production? These cameras aren’t easy to find. One of the few times I remember 8 perf being used was to shoot some of the large format photography on 2013’s “Star Trek Into Darkness.”
Regardless, I appreciate Corbet’s commitment to high resolution film stock. There aren’t many filmmakers out there willing to even shoot on film to begin with. There’s still no word as to when this next film of his will be starting production, but I would expect an announcement to potential occur next year.
