This news comes from Finnish media. Apparently, a sequel to 2023’s “Sisu” recently completed production, and is looking at a 2025 release date.
Jalmari Helander is back to direct. Jorma Tommila is reprising his lead role as the indestructible Aatami. No plot details have been revealed at this time. It should also be noted that, unlike the first film, “Sisu 2” was not shot in Finland, and has instead relocated to Estonia for most of its production.
The budget for the first film, which ended up grossing $14M worldwide, was around $6M, and the sequel is said to have cost more than double that.
Set in 1944, during the final days of World War II, and with the Nazis retreating, “Sisu” tackled an ex-soldier who discovers gold in the Finish wilderness and then gets chased by a fleet of greedy German soldiers led by a brutal SS officer.
“Sisu” was a fairly simple, and purposely nonsensical, cinematic pleasure, with a very dark sense of humor, and almost playing like a ‘40s-set Finnish version of ‘John Wick.’ Much like Wick, Aatami was a shatterproof protagonist – he’s blown up, shot, hanged, stabbed, but always manages to get back up and fight again.
The inventively stylized kills is what kept things freshly exciting in “Sisu.” So did 63-year-old Tommila who delivered a practically silent performance as the muscular Nazi-killing grandpa.
