Jim Abrahams, Director of ‘Airplane' and ‘Hot Shots,' Has Passed Away

November 26, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

The comedy film world is in mourning. Condolences to the friends and family of Jim Abrahams who has passed away at the age of 80 (via THR).

The acclaimed writer/director was best known as part of the trio Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker, which also consisted of childhood friends David and Jerry Zucker. They produced some of the most iconic comedies of the ‘80s, including “Airplane!” “Top Secret!” and “Hot Shots!” Abrahams also directed the underrated 1986 gem “Ruthless People” (seek it out tonight!)

Abrahams popularized the spoof genre of the 1980s. It all started with the indie sketch comedy “The Kentucky Fried Movie” in 1977. Abrahams wrote the script, which was directed by John Landis — a year later Landis helmed “Animal House.” Abrahams went on to direct “Airplane” three years later and the rest, as they say, is history.

Lest we forget, Abrahams was also part of the core creative team behind 1988’s “The Naked Gun,” starring Leslie Nielsen, which he co-wrote with Jerry and David Zucker. His final writing credit came with “Scary Movie 4” in 2006 — surely you can't be serious.
