Despite getting rid of ‘the Day the Earth Blew Up’ and ‘Coyote vs Acme,’ Warner Brothers Animation has not given up on greenlighting more Looney Tunes projects.
Over the weekend, Warners animation studio head, Bill Damaschke, told a crowd at the Lightbox Expo that a new “super-secret” Looney Tunes project is now in the works at Warners, and that it is being developed as a major theatrical release. Before you start thinking that it’s “Space Jam 3,” it is not, according to one source I spoke to over the weekend.
This latest development comes after Warners wanted nothing to do with “The Day the Earth Blew Up,” the first proper Looney Tunes movie in years, and shipped it off to Ketchup Entertainment. It is now getting an Oscar-qualifying run in a few weeks, aiming for a Best Animated Film nom.
The film, originally greenlit for HBO Max in 2021, was supposed to be part of the tax write-offs at Warner Bros, much like another Looney Tunes movie, “Coyote v Acme,” but ended up having its world premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June where it was met with very positive reactions.
