Another unnecessary sequel is in the works.
Martin Lawrence is having a semi-renaissance, especially with this year’s success of “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” and Sony Pictures has decided to reward him by greenlighting a sequel to “Blue Streak.” The sequel has Cole Maliska (Chicago P.D.) writing the screenplay, and no director is currently attached to the project which is still in the early stages of development.
Released in 1999, “Blue Streak” starred Lawrence as Miles, a former jewel thief who poses as a cop to retrieve a stolen diamond buried inside a police station. He decides to disguise himself as a detective and gets paired with a real policeman, played by Luke Wilson, to investigate his own burglaries.
The film topped the U.S. box office and went on to gross nearly $120M globally. Les Mayfield (“Flubber”) directed the original, but he’s likely not coming back for the sequel as Mayfield hasn’t directed a film since 2007’s “Code Name: The Cleaner.”
