UPDATE: Speaking to BirminghamWorld, Steven Knight has confirmed that Cillian Murohy will reprise the role of Tommy Shelby in the “Peaky Blinders” feature film, set to shoot in September.
EARLIER: Steven Knight, who is also writing a Star Wars film, is hard at work on the film version of his mega popular series “Peaky Blinders.” He’s one of the best screenwriters around, so attention must always be paid to Knight.
In a conversation with the Radio Times, Knight confirms that, after much delay, he’s almost done writing the “Peaky Blinders” movie script. “I’m just working on the final bits of it at the moment”, he told the outlet.
He also talks a little more about his writing process, before, surprisingly, indicating that production on the film might actually begin very shortly. “The plan is to start shooting in the middle of [2024]”, he revealed.
Knight’s British gangster series recently ended its run after six seasons. There’s no casting news as of yet, but it’s expected that Cillian Murphy, who plays Thomas Shelby, will return for the movie. This could be Murphy’s first post-Oppenheimer project, and we’re very much looking forward to it.
Ever since its 2013 premiere, the show’s fanbase has grown at a slow but steady pace throughout its six year run, with many fans discovering the show on Netflix. Knight has noted that the appeal in making a film out of the series comes in wanting “Peaky Blinders” fans to watch it together in a theater.
Set in 1919, in the aftermath of the Great War, Knight’s show tackles criminal gangs fighting for survival in a nation rocked by economic upheaval. The show focuses on one of the most powerful gangs of the time, Peaky Blinders, run by returning war hero Thomas Shelby and his family.
“Peaky Blinders,” highly acclaimed by critics, is also one of the highest rated TV shows of all-time on IMDb with an 8.8 score.
Meanwhile, Knight, who is the creator of “Peaky Blinders,” has built up a considerable filmography as one of the best and most talented screenwriters in the business, his credits include “Dirty Pretty Things,” “Locke,” “Eastern Promises” and “Spencer.”
