UPDATE: Jeff Sneider is reporting that it’s a Vampire movie, which makes sense with the original report that stated it was “genre” and had a “period” setting.
EARLIER: Here’s a hot scoop from THR’s Borys Kit. It’s taken over a decade for Ryan Coogler to direct another original movie, but the talented filmmaker will finally be going back to his roots for his next project, which sounds quite enticing.
Secrecy is so tight on Coogler’s latest project, to be produced by his own Proximity Media, that execs had to trek to the offices of WME just to read the script. Judging by the cautious steps being taken here, you’d swear that this was actually the next Christopher Nolan film.
This project is set to be the next film written and directed by Coogler, the filmmaker behind “Creed,” “Fruitvale Station,” Black Panther,” and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever — Jordan has starred in all four of those films.
The untitled project, based on an original idea from Coogler, is being described as a “genre” film. Two sources have said there is a period element to the story. Nothing more was revealed.
After dabbling, and wasting, his talents on franchise filmmaking, Coogler has finally decided to free himself from the chains of Marvel.
Just how bad is it to direct for Marvel? When Lucrecia Martel was up for the “Black Widow” directing job, she found out that Marvel already had all of the pre-vis and storyboards done for the action sequences and was told second unit had full control of the action. Coogler was barely calling the shots.
At least Coogler directed the hell out of 2015’s “Creed,” which features one of the best shot boxing matches ever put on film, a 4-minute long take that is still being talked about today.
