If you remember, Sony had bumped the release date for “The Book of Clarence” from September 22nd, 2023 to January 12th, 2024. The film tells the story of a man, living in 29 A.D. Jerusalem, who looks to capitalize on the rise of Jesus.
“The Book of Clarence” was finally released theatrically during MLK weekend. This one went totally under the radar, with almost no marketing to its name, and it didn’t help that critics were lukewarm on it. Did YOU even hear about it? Not many did.
Directed by Jeymes Samuel, the film, which screened in over 2000 U.S. theaters, opened to just $2.5 million over the weekend. It barely squeaked into the top 10. The film carries a reported $50 million budget. It now has the distinction of being the first theatrical bomb of 2024.
The talented cast includes the likes of LaKeith Stanfield, Omar Sy, David Oyelowo, Alfre Woodard, Benedict Cumberbatch and James McAvoy. Samuels is the filmmaker behind the Netflix neo-western “The Harder They Fall.”
