The SAG nominations will be more interesting than Sunday’s Golden Globes, that’s a given.
As you know, it’s a great precursor and there’s a ton of overlap between the SAG acting nominees and the Oscars. You’ll usually have 3-4 nominees in each acting category being recognized by the Oscars. The stat for Oscar/SAG winners is at about a 75% match.
UPDATE —
Where to start? How about with Colman Domingo (“Rustin”) getting into the Lead Actor category. That’s right, Leonardo DiCaprio (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) was snubbed by SAG — he could still sneak in an Oscar nomination, but it’s no longer a done deal for him.
“The Color Purple” surprised with an ensemble nomination. It’s still alive! It’s safe to say that it stole the nom away from “Poor Things” which, it turns out, isn’t as strong a contender as we might have expected.
In Supporting Actor, Willem Dafoe is in, but not co-star Mark Ruffalo! Most pundits had Ruffalo ahead of Dafoe. I’m not complaining, I find Dafoe’s performance was much more nuanced than Ruffalo’s high-end clownery.
More good news for ‘Purple,’ Danielle Brooks — the best performance in the movie — nabbed a Supporting Actress nom. However, all hail Penelope Cruz, and her fiery performance in “Ferrari,” getting a surprise Supporting Actress nomination. Well deserved!
“May December” was completely shut out! This confirms my initial assessment that it’s very much a critics movie. A little too out there for industry voters. Charles Melton, Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman were all snubbed.
“Past Lives” was also completely blanked. No Greta Lee. No ensemble nom. Sandra Huller (Anatomy Huller) was also shut out of the Lead Actress category — SAG instead opted to give Annette Bening (Nyad) a nom. I guess they don’t like reading subtitles.
