Ryûsuke Hamaguchi shocked the cinema world with a new film of his appearing, out of nowhere, in the Venice Film Festival lineup. We had no idea he was even working on a new project.
The embargo has lifted and the reviews are good for his “Evil Does Not Exist.” Not “Drive My Car” good, but it is getting, mostly, praised.
You can here read the reviews from THR, The Guardian, The Film Stage, Little White Lies, Variety, Evil Does Not Exist, Screen, and Deadline. A lot of strong notices, but many stopping short of calling it great.
This is Hamaguchi’s follow-up to his 2021 one-two punch of “Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy” and “Drive My Car.” The latter was nominated for four Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director, at the 94th Academy Awards. It also won Best International Feature.
