Craig Mazin has become a big name on television as the creator of HBO’s “Chernobyl” and “The Last of Us.” His stock has risen to the point where he’s getting plenty of offers from Hollywood.
And yet, Mazin’s experience as a film writer has, shall we say, been mediocre? He’s written the scripts for ‘The Hangover II and III,’ ‘Scary Movie 3 and 4,’ “Identity Thief,” and “The Huntsman: Winter’s War.” For decades, he was also known as the go-to script polisher for movie studios.
Now here comes word, from Mazin himself, that he’s working on the new ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movie:
“We pitched it and thought there’s no way they’re buying it, it’s too weird. And they did! And then he wrote a fantastic script and the strike happened and everyone’s waiting around.”
“Pirates of the Caribbean” producer Jerry Bruckheimer told AP back in December that he was “working on” a potential Johnny Depp return to the franchise and a screenplay had been written for it.
This was surprising news given that Depp hadn’t shown much interest in returning as Captain Jack Sparrow, especially after Disney canned him. If you remember, Disney fired Depp from the franchise shortly after Amber Heard’s Washington Post op-ed accusing him of spousal abuse.
Is Mazin’s script the same one Bruckheimer spoke of?
The "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise has been dead to many fans, especially after the last release, 2017's "Dead Men Tell No Tales.” However, money talks and reboots occur on a near-weekly basis in this industry.
