Ang Lee’s next film is a Bruce Lee biopic starring his own son in the lead role. It’s hotly-anticipated and, according to producer Lawrence Grey, all writing for the project was nearly complete before the strike.
When asked if production would begin after the strike, Grey said, "I believe that's right. We still have a little bit of work to do on it, but we've climbed some mountains, and I think we're pretty close."
Lee had hopped onboard the project last November, he is going to direct the biopic, with his son Mason starring as the Martial Arts legend. Talented screenwriter Dan Futterman (Capote, Foxcatcher) will pen the script.
If you lived through ‘90s, and aughts cinema, Lee could do no wrong. He’s was one of the most critically acclaimed filmmakers of that decade.
Lee has been stuck in a rut of big studio machinery of late, with “Taking Woodstock,” “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk,” and “Gemini Man.” It seemed as though he may have lost his mojo.
Almost every movie Lee made turned out to be gold: “Eat Drink, Man Woman,” “The Wedding Banquet,” “Sense and Sensibility,” “The Ice Strom,” “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” “Brokeback Mountain,” “Lust Caution” “Life of Pi” … Even his 2003 “Hulk” was one of the most artful superhero movies ever made.
We’ll be keeping a close eye on this one, but with the strike seeing no end, studios and actors/writers at a standstill, who knows when Lee’s biopic will be able to get the ball rolling.
