Harmony Korine’s “Aggro Dr1ft” has screened and it, supposedly, had a very high walkout rate. I’m even hearing there were a few boos during the press screening. Consider me intrigued.
The film is totally bizarre and I got the impression that it was a prank on the audience […] I can't remember a screening where so many people walked out.
According to a person in attendance, when the film ended, the applause was “slightly awkward at first,” but then it grew into cheering. So, many of those who stayed clearly felt rewarded by the experience they just had.
A review on Letterboxd states, “I don’t know if that was the best or worst thing I’ve ever seen in my life.”
Korine’s film is obviously going to polarize many. I mean, he shot the entire thing in infrared and keeps comparing it to a video game. He doesn’t even know if it should qualify as a “movie”.
The abstract description from film festivals hints at a story that involves a melancholic assassin, a demonic crime lord, skulls, swords, masks, machine guns, strippers, mobsters, horned demons and hot cars. Oh, and it’s entirely shot in infrared.
I’ll be watching “Aggro Dr1ft” next week at TIFF where it’s being screened at midnight. And no, as some have suggested, I won’t be taking any edibles beforehand. I’ll be watching this film sober as a judge.
