Here another movie from the fall fests that has underperformed with critics.
Emerald Fennell’s “Saltburn” has screened at Telluride where it’s proven to be very divisive. A 57 percent on Rotten Tomatoes isn’t good. I guess the New York Film Festival had rejected it for a reason.
Much of the criticisms seem to be about how "it's been done before," and that it's not as iconoclastic as “Promising Young Woman”. There are a lot of comparisons to “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” with some saying that Fennell outright rips it off.
You do also have a lot of non-critics raving about “Saltburn” on Twitter, which might signify a potential incoming audience-critic disconnect. Regardless, these are not the kinds of reactions that Amazon was hoping for.
