Noémie Merlant landed the top role in Audrey Diwan’s “Emmanuelle,” one left vacant by Lea Seydoux who backed out of the project a few months ago due to a scheduling conflict. Anamaria Vartolomeimight also stars.
Fresh off her “Happening” winning the Golden Lion at Venice in 2021, Diwan announced in May she was remaking softcore porn classic “Emmanuelle.” We can probably expect a feminist take on Arsan’s erotic novel, especially with all the artists involved in this latest adaptation.
Now, I’m hearing that production will begin on September 25 until December, in Paris and Hong Kong. Diwan wrote the screenplay with fellow filmmaker Rebecca Zlotowski (“Other People’s Children”). Maybe a Cannes invite will happen for this one.
The source material is based on Emmanuelle Arsan’s 1967 novel. This will also surely be an NC-17 affair. The novel has already been adapted into a film, many sequels and an infamous TV series titled “Emmanuelle in Space.” No word yet on whether Merlant will be donning a space suit for Diwan’s adaptation.
