It does look as though Neill Blomkamp will be teaming up with Sony to shoot the sequel to his cult 2009 sci-fi film “District 9.” However, the question still remain as to when exactly.
In an interview with THR, Blomkamp spoke about his box-office chart topper “Gran Turismo,” a video game adaptation that’s been getting very good audience scores.
The discussion eventually drifted towards “District 10,” a sequel to his first feature film, released in 2009, which was critically heralded, and has had fans impatiently waiting ever since. In 2021, the filmmaker had mentioned that he was writing the film with wife Terri Tatchell and actor Sharlto Copley.
Nearly 15 years after its release, the demand is still there and Blomkamp seems to be indicating that if “Gran Turismo” turns out to be a success then he will be shooting the sequel in the near future.
At some point down the line, it’ll probably get made.
THR then asked him if the official start of “District 10” depended on the success of “Gran Turismo” with the public. "Yes, that makes sense," Blomkamp replied.
Blomkamp’s “District 9” follow-up was 2013‘s “Elysium” which proved to be very divisive (I liked it!), his third film 2015’s “Chappie” was outright panned, and few saw his 2021 sci-fi feature “Demonic”. There are plenty of “Chappie” fans out there, most of which believe it didn’t deserve its gloomy fate.
Blomkamp is an interesting filmmaker, with his own unique vision of things. Although I found “District 9” faltered in its final stretch, it had these very strong moments that elevated it above the usual sci-fi that we are used to seeing on-screen.
