“Barbie” is still topping the box-office, having today surpassed “The Dark Knight” as Warner Bros’ highest grossing film. It’s a mass cultural event and it hasn’t shown signs of letting up.
In fact, Greta Gerwig’s film might again top this coming weekend’s box-office, and maybe the weekend after that (if “Blue Beetle” massively underperforms). It’s been at the top spot now for four straight weeks.
However, with $535 million grossed domestically, not to mention $1.2 billion worldwide, “Barbie” has now set up a digital release date of September 5th — that’s less than three weeks from now. Why the rush?
Compare it to Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” which is only set to be available digitally in November, and you have a massive difference in planning for Universal and Warners Bros’ respective digital strategies.
