After multiple delays, which included extensive reshoots, Taika Waititi’s “Next Goal Wins” released a trailer this past April.
Then we learned it was going to have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, this announcement came with a November 17th theatrical release date.
Principal photography on the film began in November of 2019 and ended in January 2020. This means that “Next Goal Wins” is set to premiere almost four years after shooting wrapped.
Now, we have a Bloomberg report claiming that Waititi’s film might again have its theatrical release delayed by Searchlight Pictures, this time due to the SAG strike. This film is absolutely cursed. The TIFF premiere is still, supposedly, happening.
“The discussions are at an early stage, but could impact films including Poor Things, Next Goal Wins, Wish and Magazine Dreams, which are all slated for release this year. Any changes will depend on the outcome of the review, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing internal matters.”
Delays had initially been caused due to Armie Hammer being in the movie. Hammer got #MeToo’ed after it had already been shot. His was a side character so the movie wasn’t completely scrapped. Instead, Will Arnett replaced Hammer during reshoots of the soccer comedy.
The film stars Michael Fassbender as, Dutch professional soccer coach, Thomas Rongen and his attempt to turn the American Samoa soccer team into winners. Co-starring with Fassbender in the movie will be the likes of Will Arnett, Elizabeth Moss and Rhys Darby
