What kind of fall movie season are we in for if Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla” has been chosen as the Centerpiece selection of the 60th New York Film Festival.
NYFF tends to choose the films they are most excited to showcase as their “centerpiece.” The past few years, occupying that slot have been “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed,” “The Power of Dog,” “Marriage Story,” and “ROMA.” Some real powerhouses there.
Before this announcement, some of the films that had been rumored for the “centerpiece” spot included Alexander Payne’s “The Holdovers,” David Fincher’s “The Killer” and Emerald Fennell’s “Saltburn.”
The “North American Premiere” label that NYFF has given “Priscilla” means that it’s skipping Telluride and Toronto. It also entails that a Venice world premiere has been set.
NYFF Artistic Director Dennis Lim said, in the press releas, “‘Priscilla’ is a culminating triumph for Sofia Coppola, a filmmaker with a singular gift for illuminating the interior lives of her characters. It’s a showcase for a pair of star-making performances and a work of tremendous empathy and emotional nuance. We are looking forward to welcoming Sofia back to the festival with one of her very best films.”
Coppola described “Priscilla” as “Marie Antoinette in Graceland.” Bring it. Some on-set photos leaked in the Spring, they showed Elvis and Priscilla Presley, husband and wife, strolling outdoors.
The film is based on the memoir “Elvis and Me” by Priscilla Presley. It stars Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi as Priscilla and Elvis.
A24 will distribute “Priscilla”. Coppola is reteaming with her longtime collaborators, including Cinematographer Philippe Le Sourd, and Editor Sarah Flack.
