The trailer for Tricia Cooke and Ethan Coen’s “Drive-Away Dolls” (originally titled “Drive-Away Dykes”) was released almost a month ago.
Coen and Cooke, the latter happens to be his wife, confirmed to Collider that “Drive Away Dolls” is the first of a planned “lesbian B movie trilogy.”
On Monday, a private screening for “Drive Away Dolls” occurred. "I received an anonymous email about a private screening of “Drive Away Dolls” that happened in recent months.
Based on what I’ve been told, you can tell this feels like half a Coen Brothers' tale, but not necessarily always a fault. This viewer thinks Cooke's impact on the work will drive a fascinating dialogue behind its origin and motivation.
It’s an “incredibly queer-friendly”, entertaining, and silly road trip tale with lots of boundary-pushing explicit sex. Both leads outshine the major A-list stars and Margaret Qualley in one of her best performances to date.
I need to repeat, there is a lot of explicit sex in this film. Steamy scenes. Flirting into NC-17 territory. Cooke/Coen are said to have a major obsession with the female body in this one.
Oscar Nominated Cinematographer Ari Wegner (The Power of the Dog) is lensing Coen's solo debut which is said to be a road movie in the same vein as the Joel and Ethan’s 1987 classic “Raising Arizona.”
The cast assembled for Coen’s film is great: Margaret Qualley, Geraldine Viswanathan, Beanie Feldstein, Pedro Pascal, Colman Domingo, Bill Camp and Matt Damon.
Coen and Cooke initially wrote the screenplay in the mid-2000s, which was originally being sold as a “Russ Meyer-inspired romp” and was going to be directed by Allison Anders (“Gas Food Lodging”).
Given the current actors strike, I have no idea where this one lands, festival-wise, or even if its September 22nd release date gets postponed.
