An update on ‘Barbenheimer.’
As mentioned a few weeks ago, the embargo for Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” lifts on July 19, around the same time it gets screened for press, since the earliest non-junket press screening seems to be happening on July 18.
Gerwig’s “Barbie” will have its embargo lifted on July 13th, as some screenings have slowly, but surely, started happening in and around L.A. and NYC. And yet, I know critics, from major publications, who have still not seen the film and are justifiably frustrated with Warner Bros.
I have spoken to a few journalists so far who have seen “Barbie”, two were mixed and one was somewhat positive. Do I still think it could get good reviews? Of course. This is such a small sampling and we already know how the tide can turn quickly.
As for “Oppenheimer,” I wrote a few weeks ago of two people I spoke to who saw it. Both were positive, but with some reservations. It does sound like a hard sell, I won’t lie. A critic friend said it was “pretentious” at times and that the last half hour was jaw dropping.
That’s all I know, so far. I’m scheduled to see “Oppenheimer” on July 18, and still haven’t received an invite to “Barbie.” Will Warner blackball me? I sure hope not.
“Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” are both being released on July 21st.
