Who will direct the next James Bond? Villeneuve? Nolan? That’s been the pressing question for a few months now, but at least we can scratch off Sam Mendes.
In a recent interview with Empire (via The Times of India), Mendes confirmed that he received a "generous offer" from the producers behind the franchise to direct the next film, but that he eventually declined.
Mendes added that “Skyfall” was one of the “best experiences” of his life, but that he currently has too many projects lined up to concentrate on Bond. At least this means that Bond producer Barbara Broccoli is currently looking for a filmmaker.
Indeed, Mendes’ “Skyfall,” lensed by Roger Deakins, was one of the best Bonds of the last few decades. I’d also add Martin Campbell’s excellent “Casino Royale” to the mix as well.
An actor has yet to be cast to take over Daniel Craig’s 007 role. It’ll likely continue that way until, at least, the writers' and actors’ strikes conclude. Aaron Taylor-Johnson was heavily-rumored as the frontrunner some months ago.
A few years ago, we came very close to having Christopher Nolan directing Bond. He even admitted to having spoken to Bond producers about the gig. Nolan had been developing the story with Bond writers Purvis and Wade, who were tasked to write the new film while Nolan was finishing “Oppenheimer”.
Meanwhile, Denis Villeneuve seems to be the current frontrunner at the moment. In 2021, on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Villeneuve, who is a self-admitted mega Bond fan, said it would be a dream to direct a movie in the franchise if he were ever asked to.
Villeneuve came very close to directing “No Time to Die,” with Deadline writer Baz Bamigboye reporting that Craig was actively pursuing him. However, Villeneuve turned it down after he got his dream film, “Dune,” greenlit over at Warner Bros. Cary Fukunaga ended up directing “No Time to Die” instead.
