Fresh off “Top Gun: Maverick,” filmmaker Joseph Kosinski is shooting his Formula One movie, starring Brad Pitt, this coming weekend.
They will be at the British Grand Prix for on-site filming, featuring stunt drivers in modified F2 cars. F1 has also built Pitt his own custom garage in the pit lane, this is for the characters of Sonny Hayes (Pitt) and Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris).
We also now know, via ESPN, that the film is titled “Apex.” Here’s the plot synopsis:
Brad Pitt plays a Formula One driver who comes out of retirement to mentor a younger driver (Damson Idris), and take his final stab at glory on the track as the younger driver’s teammate.
It sounds like “Top Gun: Maverick,” but with race cars and Pitt instead of Cruise. Might as well recycle the same formula that brought you great success last year.
Kosinski and his crew have developed the smallest moveable 6k camera ever designed to take the viewer into the cockpit. The tech being utilized in this film has never been used before if a motion picture.
Apple has tagged along for the ride and it’ll be getting a full-fledged theatrical release next year. No studio has bought the theatrical rights yet, but, whoever does, you can bet it will be making a lot of money.
Before “Top Gun: Maverick,” Kosinski was mostly known for directing the Tom Cruise starring sci-fi film “Oblivion,” “Tron: Legacy” and “Only the Brave.” He’s now become one of the most sought-after blockbuster filmmakers in the industry.
The film stars Pitt, Idris, Kerry Condon and Tobias Menzies. There is currently no set release date, but a presumed 2024 launch seems to be in the cards.
