Nicolas Winding Refn shot an adaptation of children’s book “The Famous Five” for the BBC. What an odd pairing. This one has gone totally under the radar.
Filming has wrapped in the southwest of the U.K. and with it we have our first photo of the project, which can be seen above. Winding Refn’s statement:
“All my life I’ve fought vigorously to remain a child with a lust for adventure. By reimagining the ‘Famous Five,’ I am preserving that notion by bringing these iconic stories to life for a progressive new audience, instilling the undefinable allure and enchantment of childhood for current and future generations to come.”
The series follows five daring young explorers as they encounter treacherous, action-packed adventures, mysteries, unparalleled danger and astounding secrets in an “unforgettable odyssey”.
Netflix and Nicolas Winding Refn launched “Copenhagen Cowboy” at Venice last year, it was Refn’s first production in Denmark since 2007’s “Pusher III.” Here is yet another TV series for the renowned Danish auteur.
Refn claimed last year that “Hollywood was falling apart.” Hopefully he’ll get back into making movies, but who knows when. He keeps hinting at something in interviews, although he says he’s currently more interested in a new hobby: painting.
Refn is the director behind “Drive,” “Only God Forgives,” “Valhalla Rising,” and the “Pusher” trilogy. He makes dark, brooding and moody films. Why is he making a children’s limited series? Who knows!
