IndieWire’s lovely Anne Thompson, a consummate pro, with her finger always at the pulse of the Oscar race, is reporting that Academy screenings of “Oppenheimer” have had lines around the block this weekend, with every seat filled.

Okay, so what are we thinking here, 10 nominations, at a minimum? I’m looking at Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Score, Costume, Editing, Makeup … Maybe even Sound Editing. That’s 11 categories.
“Oppenheimer” is one of the best-reviewed movies of the year — it has an 89 Metascore and sits at 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. There are plenty of pundits already saying that it’s the Best Picture frontrunner, but I think Scorsese’s more accessible “Killers of the Flower Moon” slightly edges it, for now.
Back in June, I conducted a critics mid-year poll which assessed the best films of the year, so far. The ones that stood out as possible Best Picture contenders included “Past Lives,” “Across the Spider-Vers” and “AIR.” We can now include “Oppenheimer” and, I guess, potentially, “Barbie.” That’s five contenders headed into the fall season.
