Christopher McQuarrie is confirming to Empire Magazine that Tom Cruise’s “gnarly” R-Rated movie is still happening.
Cruise has been mostly dabbling in action for the last decade, but I’ve mentioned his talents as an actor numerous times here, further proof can be found in his great performances in films like “Magnolia,” “Collateral” and “Born on the Fourth of July.”
Cruise’s focus on big budget franchise films with McQuarrie, especially the ‘Mission: Impossible’ films, Jack Reacher and “Top Gun: Maverick” (which McQuarrie penned) have amassed a large audience, but with ‘Dead Reckoning — Part One’ underperforming at the box-office, maybe now I’d the time for Cruise to hop on-board a true original.
McQuarrie is telling Empire (via Collider) that after work has been completed on “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two,” they can move on to their next project, which has been dubbed “The Gnarly Movie” by online fans.
McQuarrie adds that work has continued on that project and that he wrote the script alongside Erik Jendresen, his co-writer on ‘Dead Reckoning’.
There’s a movie that Cruise and I are talking about doing next or in some probable next, that Erik and I developed together – what has been referred to on the internet as ‘The Gnarly Movie’. It’s that movie that they’re all asking for, and that we want to do.
The film had been previously described as having a “very un-Tom character” and being “hard-edged”.
When asked why he and Cruise have been so focused on action franchises lately, McQuarrie noted that Cruise was focused on making “event movies” for a dwindling box office
