I just know that Netflix’s upcoming “Depp v Heard” will be watched by millions of eyeballs, mine included. A trailer has been released.
That celebrity trial was quite something, although I only saw online clips, and this doc is going to tackle it from all angles. Of course, it paled in comparison to the O.J. Simpson trial, but what the O.J. phenomenon didn’t have was social media.
That seems to be the angle Netflix will be going for in “Depp v. Heard,” a three-part series examining the defamation case. It doesn’t seem to be taking sides either, but, rather, examining the nature of truth — which is what really fascinated me with Depp v Heard. There were clearly a lot of lies being told under oath.
The docuseries is set to debut on August 16th, its director Emma Cooper went through close to 200 hours of trial coverage, but the whole thing will be seen through the eyes on influencers.
It all ended with Amber Heard owing Depp a cool $15 million. Did she ever pay him that amount? Of course, the media, who had a clearcut bias against Depp before the trial even started, engaged in their own kind of defaming, even going as far as trying to spin Depp’s victory — “Johnny Depp and Amber Heard Each Defamed Each Other, Jury Rules” stated Variety. Quite the spin.
The pre-trial narrative was that Depp abused Heard and that she was a #MeToo survivor, but perceptions clearly changed, post-trial, in Depp’s favor.
Heard’s claims of abuse at the hands of Depp seemed sketchy from the get-go. Her Washington Post Op-Ed, which kickstarted the firestorm, was as inauthentic as her acting talents. But everyone believed it and it resulted into this nasty domino effect.
Depp was quickly deemed persona non grata in Hollywood because of these domestic violence accusations made by his former wife. He had to go to court to get his good name back, but, even after his victory, he’s still not very much welcomed in many industry circles.
Of course, it takes two to tango, and this formerly married couple were a toxic duo who absolutely destroyed each other with their entitled and shallow narcissism.
I am by no means saying that Depp is totally innocent, the actor clearly had his own substance abuse issues, but this trial made Heard look like Glenn Close in “Fatal Attraction.”
