A fantastic filmmaker-heavy jury has been announced for the 80th Venice Film Festival.
Jane Campion, Martin McDonagh, Mia Hansen-Løve and Laura Poitras will join jury president Damien Chazelle on the Venice 2023 jury. It’s going to be very interesting to see how these filmmaking heavyweights will select the award winners.
Also on this year’s jury will be Palestinian actor Saleh Bakri, Argentine filmmaker Santiago Mitre as well as Chinese actress Shu Qi. Quite honestly, a much better jury than the one Cannes had this past May.
While we’re at it, here’s my updated predictions for this year’s competition:
Ferrari (Michael Mann)
The Beast (Betrand Bonello)
Drive-Away Dolls (Ethan Coen)
Priscilla (Sofia Coppola)
Maestro (Bradley Cooper)
Poor Things (Yorgos Lanthimos)
Memory (Michel Franco)
El Conde (Pablo Larraín)
How Do You Live (Hayao Miyazaki)
Strangers (Andrew Haigh)
The Palace (Roman Polanski)
Io Capitano (Matteo Garrone)
Dogman (Luc Besson)
Le Successeur (Xavier LeGrand)
Fingernails (Christos Nikou)
The Peasants (Dorota Kobiela)
Limonov (Kiril Serebrenikkov)
Saltburn (Emerald Fennell)
The Theory of Everything (Tim Kroger)
Hours Saison (Stéphane Brizé)
Lubo (Giorgio Diritti)
Enea (Pietro Castellitto)
Finalmente L’Alba (Saverio Costanzo)
The 80th Venice film festival will go from August 30-September 9. Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers” will open the festivities. The full festival lineup will be announced on July 25th.
