Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla” is going to be a hot ticket at the Venice Film Festival.
The film, tackling Elvis and Priscilla Presley’s blossoming romance, is an A24 production that comes with hefty expectations. However, don’t count the Elvis Estate as fans of the film, they hated it. In fact, it enraged its members so much that they decided to go to the press.
One estate official, who saw the film, was quoted as saying that Coppla's writing and directing was "horrible," adding "It feels like a college movie. The set designs are just horrific, it's not what Graceland looks like."
Yes, I’m sure that’s what they’re most upset about.
I won’t lie, that’s pretty funny. Since when has the Elvis estate delved into film criticsm? It is worth noting that they are currently in the middle of a feud with Priscilla over, what else, money. These comments come with some hefty baggage.
I’m actually impressed by the fact that not many people are mentioning that Coppola’s film tackles a somewhat risqué relationship. Elvis and Priscilla met in 1959 when she was just 14 and he was 24. Is the film going to tackle that age gap?
A teaser for the film was released earlier in the weeks and it definitely looked like a Sofia Coppola movie, from the shot selection to the indie rock soundtrack, this has her name written all over it.
The film is based on the memoir “Elvis and Me” by Priscilla Presley. It stars Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi as the famous couple. No word yet on a release date, but I’m hearing October is being eyed as a possibility.
