I’ve spoken to a few critics who attended last night’s first screening of ‘Mission: Impossible 7’.
The consensus that I got was that it’s good, but not great. The train scene keeps being mentioned as a major highlight. “It’s no FALLOUT,” a friend confided.
Then again, not too many action movies have ever attained the high level of “Mission: Impossible — Fallout,” so there’s that. “It’s solid but way too long,” another attendee added.
Meanwhile, we can scratch off next year’s ‘Dead Reckoning — Part Two’ as the final chapter of the franchise.
Christopher McQuarrie revealed to Fandango that ‘MISSION IMPOSSIBLE - DEAD RECKONING’ Parts 1 & 2 are not the end of the series. He adds that Cruise and himself already have ideas for what’s next.
So, more ‘Mission: Impossible,’ maybe a third ‘Top Gun,’ and that Doug Liman directed movie shot in space are all possibly next on Cruise’s agenda.
I’m waiting for the day when Cruise, a talented actor, watch “Magnolia,” goes back to more dramatic non-IP roles. In the ‘80s, ‘90s and, some of the 2000s, Cruise kept stretching himself as an actor. Now all he does is action flicks — save for his underrated turn in 2017’s “American Made.”
