After The Flash’s lukewarm opening, many were wondering if it could hold on to the top spot this coming weekend. It turns out, it might actually finish at #3.
The phenomenon known as “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” Sony's acclaimed animated movie, returned to 1st place at the daily box office on Wednesday with an estimated $3.80M — its total domestic gross stands at $294.19M.
It really looks like it will finish at #1 this weekend, reclaiming the top spot it held during the weekend of June 2nd to June 4th. The film is almost a month old, but it’s still making a lot of money. It does go to show that for a superhero movie to now be successful it has to be, you know, be good.
‘Spider-Verse’ is an imagination gone wild, an animated breakthrough that reinvents what we thought we knew an animated film do. It’s visionary stuff. In fact, the film has been so critically-acclaimed that it might finish at #1 on our mid-year critics poll (being published tomorrow). It’s currently a dead heat between Spidey and ‘Past Lives.’
‘Across the Spider-Verse’ will easily pass the $300 million mark by Friday evening, it’s going to probably be at $315+ million by Sunday, maybe more. And this is just domestically.
There is only one big new release coming on Friday —“No Hard Feelings”— and it’s aiming for a tepid $10-$12 million opening.
As mentioned, “The Flash” might actually finish in third place come Sunday night. “Elemental” made more money last night. It’s turning into such a huge failure for Warner Bros, especially since it cost around $220 million to make.
