Sam Esmail’s adaptation of Fritz Lang’s classic 1927 sci-fi film “Metropolis” has been permanently axed due to the writers strike.
The series, positioned to be one of the priciest in Apple TV history, was in pre-production in Australia. Deadline is reporting that the crew was notified that the ambitious project will not move forward with production. It was supposed to shoot this summer.
Esmail’s “Metropolis” has been a long-gestating passion project for the “Mr. Robot” creator, and in the works, for close to seven years. Esmail was set to write and direct all 8 episodes of the mini series.
The sheer scope and vision of Lang’s 1925 masterpiece was such an astonishing statement at such an early stage of cinema. How can we ever forget it? It's up there with "Citizen Kane" as one of the most influential movies of all-time. It influenced how science fiction would feel, look, be dreamed-up for the next 90 years.
