As Pablo Larraín prepares to premiere his “El Conde” at Venice this September, he’s ready to shoot another movie.
Angela Jolie will star as famous opera singer Maria Callas in the aptly titled “Maria.” I’m hearing a July shoot is set for the film in Greece and Rome.
The tumultuous, beautiful, and tragic story of the life of the world’s greatest opera singer, relived and re-imagined during her final days in 1970s Paris,” according to its logline. Steven Knight (“Spencer,” “Peaky Blinders,” “Eastern Promises”) wrote the script.
Larraín’s previous two biopics, “Spencer” starring Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana and 2016’s “Jackie,” garnered Best Actress nominations for its two lead actresses. Before that, Larraín was known as the Chilean auteur behind “No,” “Neruda” and “The Club.”
Jolie also has her directorial effort “Without Blood,” starring Salma Hayek,” ready to go for the fall fests. It’s Jolie’s fifth feature as a filmmaker. Her last one was 2014’s “Unbroken” — am I the only person who thought that movie was very good?
